Rathian

Rathian is the female counterpart of the Rathalos and also renowned as The Queen of the Wyverns. Rathians are green wyverns that slightly vary from Rathalos in looks and attacks. She has a patch of brown thorns on her upper back and her tail spikes are filled with poison. The Rathian fights on the ground a lot more than the Rathalos, who more often exhibits aerial attacks such as fireballs and claw attacks. They are prized for their rare Plates & Rubies. The Rathian has two other subspecies, the Pink Rathian and Gold Rathian.
In MH3 the Qurupeco is able to call out, attracting one of a number of other creatures. A Rathian is one such creature and can even be summoned during the "Trapping the Trickster" 3 star quest, before the hunter's formal introduction to it. The Rathian in MH3 is somewhat revamped in color, as the scales appear darker than its earlier green scales. She also has notably less spines, or thorns, on her back and wings. When Rathian is low on stamina, she will trip at the end of charges, taunt more, and fire a small puff of flame from her mouth instead of fireballs. She will also set off to either sleep at the nest or prey on an Aptonoth. If she manages to pin down a player and bite them, she will be able to recover enough stamina to stop being hungry.

  • A Rathian can be called by a Qurupeco, either in the Deserted Island or Sandy Plains.
  • Rathian has more HP than Rathalos in each game other than MH3.
  • Rathian and Rathalos will always go after hunters that are carrying their eggs.
  • When Rathian attacks an Aptonoth it drops a shiny.
  • Rathian's performance in battle becomes poorer when its Rathalos partner is defeated, possibly due to grief.

Gobul

Gobul is a large angler that shows great resemblance to a puffer fish with the addition of retractable spikes, and an Angler Fish with its attractive lure. It is found in the new Flooded Forest area.
Gobul is often relatively passive until attacked. It spends most of its time lying under the river bed, exposing only its whiskers, to disguise itself as a common plant. During this hidden state, hunters can gather from it, but should be cautious, as this is used as a trap to lure prey. It can also be attacked when in this state. Sonic bombs can be used, in the same fashion as Diablos, to bring it out of hiding only when not inflated. While it tends to stay in the water, it does sometimes climb up on land, even if not chasing after prey.
When Gobul is under water and hidden in an area with a fishing spot, a Frog can be used to fish him out similar to fishing Plesioth in previous games. This causes it to flip over for about 15 seconds, after which it will continue the fight on land in the current area. Fishing out Gobul is often a subquest, and will lead to extra rewards.
Its attacks include: biting hunters with its huge mouth, "inflating" itself (exposing sharp spikes on its back) then rolling over hunters, swinging its large, needle-covered tail back and forth, inflicting paralysis, and an underwater "vacuum breath," with which it draws hunters in close to its mouth and bites down. Otherwise, Gobul may hide underground to leap out at a target or recover stamina. Its bioluminescent lure can also inflict KO status to the hunter, but can be broken just like the Gypceros' crest. Its lure can be broken and tail cut off. When enraged, Gobul will stay inflated, and its spikes will remain visible.

Qurupeco

Qurupeco is a monster featured in Monster Hunter 3. It has a trumpet-like crest, a large red air sac, and a flat fan-like tail that turns red when it is enraged and bright green when fatigued. It uses its vocal abilities to summon aid from various monsters, as well as healing them and boosting their abilities. The Qurupeco's soft crest and throat sac makes the Qurupeco a very delicate monster.
There is a Qurupeco Sword and Shield, Hammer, and Medium Bowgun.
The Qurupeco armor set is most notable for Evade+ and RecoveryUp.
Qurupeco's beak and flint wingtips can be broken for additional rewards at the end of a quest, such as Flintstone and Strange Beak.
When its vocal sac is inflated, it is susceptible to loud noises, much like the Yian Kut-Ku. This makes Sonic Bombs or objects that cause explosions effective at stopping some of its abilities, leaving the interrupted Qurupeco disoriented for a moment and causing it to drop an item.

The Qurupeco is the first monster you encounter in the offline quests that has an elemental attack. As a result it it recommended to have at least +10 fire resistance. This can be achieved either via an armor set bonus or by decorating your armor with 5x Crimson Jewels. Some examples of useful armor for this fight:
  • Rhenoplos Armor: At this point of the game this is the only armor with +10 fire resistance. It also has the best physical defense.
  • Steel Armor: You have to use decorations to raise the fire resistance to +10, but Critical Eye +1 and the Speed Sharpening help a lot, in particular if you are using the hammer or sword+shield, which lose their sharpness faster.
  • Hunter's Armor: Useful if fighting the monster for the first time, as it lets you track the Qurupeco without paintballing it (Auto-tracking skill). It also opens up another space in your inventory since you do not need to carry a map (Farsight skill).
  • Before engaging the Qurupeco, max out your stamina. You'll be doing a lot of running and dodging, and you don't want to find yourself exhausted in the wrong spot.
  • Whenever the Qurupeco changes areas, take the time to top up your health, stamina, and sharpen your weapon.

Royal Ludroth

The Royal Ludroth is a medium sized Leviathan, and the alpha-male of the Ludroth. It has a crown-like crest as well as a large yellow mane; both of which can be broken. Its tail can also be cut off which if collected it can be worth alot. The Royal Ludroth uses a water-bomb charge attack bearing some resemblance to the Gypceros' "Drunken Charge". The creature has been seen wherever Ludroths, smaller females of the same species, have been spotted. The Royal Ludroth shows gender-dimorphism, as the male is much larger and stronger than the female.
The mane around its neck is a spongy material which it uses to store water while on land. Its spongy mane will shrink as it gets tired, causing its ability to use water attacks to be hindered. Usually when this happens, it will retreat back to water to recover stamina. It can also roll in puddles to rehydrate.
In Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, it will retreat to Area 2 in the Deserted Isle and shower under the waterfall to recover Stamina.
Royal Ludroth also uses rolls to attack a hunter. There are 2 types of rolls that Royal Ludroth can perform. One in which it will do a short roll to its side and another where it will do a roll/body slam that covers more distance and is considerably faster. The shorter roll is sometimes used to recover stamina.
In Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, it is possible for the Royal Ludroth to turn slightly while rolling, covering a quarter-circle shaped area.
Royal Ludroth can be seen in Areas 5 and 9-12 in Deserted Island. In the Flooded Forest, Royal Ludroth will start out in Area 4, but can move if not encountered. It can also travel between Areas 1-6, and 8. Even though its attacks are much stronger and more effective in the water it will always sleep on land. In the Flooded Forest it sleeps on the land in Area 8 and in the Deserted Island it sleeps at Area 12.

Great Jaggi

The Great Jaggi is a monster featured in Monster Hunter 3. It is larger than previous Dromes. It has a long, barbed tail and large frills on the sides of its head. Unlike previous Dromes, the Great Jaggi gives three carves instead of two.
Great Jaggi, along with the Great Baggi, may attack other boss monsters instead of focusing solely on the hunter, indicating a highly competitive and intelligent demeanor. It can also summon Jaggi at any time with a loud, resonating roar. Being a larger and more powerful dominant male of Jaggi and Jaggia, it is considered by players to be the boss of these monsters. Its alpha status is much more prominent than that of previous Dromes, as it features many of the characteristics of full-fledged boss monsters—the ability to become enraged, limping when weak, and having a breakable part. One should note that the Great Jaggi can be summoned by the Qurupeco at the Deserted Island or the Sandy Plains. Even with all of these upgrades on the traditional dromes, the great jaggi is still considered to be the easiest of the boss monsters to defeat.

Preface - Meet the Great Jaggi The Great Jaggi is one of the simplest boss monsters you will face in Tri. The reason is that you have seen all his moves before. As you play the game, the quests that you took that forced you to fight Jaggi and Jaggia introduce you to the basic combat styles of these particular species of monsters. Like the younger minions, the Great Jaggi employs the same basic moves such as Biting, Tail Whips, and Hipchecks (the move where he uses the entire side of his body and lunges at your for a great amount of damage). He also shares the cautious nature of the minions as well, usually hopping back and forth in and out of melee range.

On top of these moves are the abilities to summon and control minions using specific howls and barks (Orangutan Howl).
When you are in an area with more than 3 Jaggi and Jaggia, they will be directed to follow and harass you. They actually circle you and will all attack at the same time given the command by the Great Jaggi (Wolf Howl). This can be very dangerous situation for new players of the series as now not only do you have the minions attacking, but also the Great Jaggi. So the first part of your strategy is to take out the minion monsters. This can be a chore however given the cautious nature of the minions, but they are easy to overcome. Another thing to remember is that when the Great Jaggi is performing his calls, he is wide open for attack. So if you have no minions to worry about or you feel confident enough with them around, jump in to attack if you can.

The Fight - The attacks and what to do about them

The Great Jaggi himself is rather simple. Your target is his head at nearly all times in a fight as it deals the most damage to him. A well placed hit to his head can cause him to flinch, even fly to the ground giving you an extra opportunity to put in more hits. You must however be cautious of his attacks as well. The key to this fight are the audible and visual clues he gives depending on his attack.

His most basic attack is that of the bite. He will run up to you and make a growl as he lunges forward with his head.
You can avoid this by staying at his side at all times or just take the damage; the attack does very little damage. He can however, make an immediate second attack where he lunges at you causing you to fall, so its best to avoid his front during these times. Roll past him, either to the left or right during this attack. Turn around and perform a quick strike. If he does a second attack, follow after him and put in a few more hits. Since he is on two legs turning around can take time, so take advantage of this!

Another attack is his tail whip. The cue for this attack is him standing still with his head forward follow by a grunt as he spins his body around.
He always performs 2 tail whips, going full circle from his starting position (in rage he could do 1 and stop there however). The barbs on his tail can deal a lot more damage depending on where you get hit. If you are at the base of his tail, the damage is relatively light compared to if you were hit near the end. If you are up close and personal, you can easily avoid the whip by rolling away from him, otherwise its a good idea to wait for his second whip before charging into battle. He always performs this maneuver to his left (to the right if you are facing him). One good way to avoid the attack is to simply roll in the direction of the tail whip, but if you are new and are still learning, try to keep the heroics down to a minimum. In this attack, you can again take advantage of his low turning speed by being ready for him when he stops. Position yourself behind or to the side of him and be ready to hit his head.

Lastly his hipcheck not only deals the most damage, but has the easiest to recognize signal for when he will do it.
The noise is very distinct when he performs the attack; sort of like a cross of a yell and a bark. He will turn his body to the side and swing in order to gain momentum for the full move, then use the entire side of his body to ram into you. When you hear the cue, dive away to the side. The hitbox for any hipcheck is generally large and normally you cannot roll under or past it, so you must avoid it completely. Because you have to completely get out of the way of the attack, hitting him when you are the target is not recommended. If you are not the target, rush in there after the hipcheck for more hits.

One last thing to mention is his rage mode
. He goes into rage usually after breaking the frills on his head, immediately after waking him up from sleep, or just dealing damage at certain points of his health. You know when any monster is in rage when you see a puff of steam coming from his mouth. When he is in this mode his movements become faster and the damage he deals sharply increases. He will perform more tail whips and hipchecks than before, so getting close is usually a bad idea for a beginner. Rage mode in general is your indicator of how well you are doing. The more he rages, the more your attacks are showing an effect on him.

After you have damaged him enough he generally goes into 3 different states. The first is that of hunger. You will see his mouth salivating and drooling. This is your cue to place some tainted meat on the ground to stun him for some extra hits. The second state is that of rage and like already mentioned, it is best to avoid. The last is his weakened state. You know this when you see him limp away from you'. This limp tells you 2 things. That he is nearly dead and that he is now capturable. Chasing after him will lead you to where he goes to lay down and sleep, so it is best to wait a bit for him to fall asleep if you want to capture him. However keep in mind the longer he sleeps the more health he will recover, so be quick with whatever you need to do before finishing the job.
